Looking after your frame
Hanging and care
A frame needs very little: the right fixings, a wall out of the sun and a damp cloth now and then.
Hanging your frame
- Use fixings that suit the wall: plugs and screws for brick and plaster, proper drywall anchors for boards.
- Use a spirit level and two fixing points on wider frames, so the frame hangs straight and does not shift.
- Large and Technic frames are heavier than they look once the model is in. Check the fixings now and then, especially on a wall that gets bumped.
- Hang the frame where it will not be knocked by doors, chairs or passing shoulders.
Clipping models in and out
Models clip into place without glue, so you can take them out and put them back whenever you like.
Lay the frame flat on a soft surface before you open it. Lift the acrylic front off, press the model gently into its clips, check it sits square, then refit the front. To take a model out, ease it out of the clips rather than pulling on a wing or a spoiler.
Cleaning the acrylic
- Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth. A drop of mild dish soap in the water lifts fingerprints.
- Never wipe acrylic dry: dust on a dry cloth scratches it.
- Do not use window cleaner, ammonia, alcohol or solvents. They cloud and crack acrylic.
- The acrylic front keeps dust off the model, so the bricks themselves rarely need cleaning.
Sunlight
Direct sun is the main thing to avoid. Over time UV light fades printed backgrounds and driver portraits, and it yellows white and light grey bricks.
Choose a wall out of direct sun. In South Africa north-facing rooms get the most of it. The acrylic front keeps dust off but is not a UV filter.
Heat and humidity
- Avoid bathrooms, the wall above a kettle or stove, and spots next to heaters and fireplaces.
- Coastal humidity is fine for the frame and the bricks, but keep frames away from walls that get damp.
Moving house
- Take the models out of the frame and pack them separately. Keep the box your frame came in if you can.
- Carry frames upright and acrylic side in, with something soft against the front.
